Howdy WHA Members,
With the Texas Legislature currently in its third session, the issue we are watching most closely is redistricting. This is the first redistricting cycle in nearly fifty years to take place without federal oversight due to a 2013 Supreme County decision from Shelby County v. Holder. The first proposal for a new map of the Texas House was released last week and you can keep up with the various plans for Congress, the House, Senate, and State Board of Education via a District Viewer. The other major issue still pending for this session is the allocation of COVID relief dollars.
Here at the West Houston Association, we hosted our annual Public and Elected Officials Reception at the Westin Memorial City on September 9th where WHA members were able to discuss an array of issues and opportunities with representatives from across the three counties and 11 municipalities that coexist within the 1,000 square miles of greater West Houston. Special thanks to our sponsors for that event. Gold sponsors included: ABHR, BGE, Caldwell Companies and the Howard Hughes corporation. Silver sponsors included: Costello, EHRA Engineering, Houston Community College, Johnson Development, LJA Engineering, Parkside Capital, and R.G. Miller Engineers.
On October 14th we will host a State and Local Update luncheon with the Dean of the Texas Senate, John Whitmire. Then our final event of the year will be our 2021 Annual WHA Awards Ceremony on November 17th. In the meantime, we also have a handful of WHA Committee meetings coming up including Flood Control and Drainage (10/11), Sustainable Infrastructure (10/12), Education & Workforce (10/13), Regional Mobility (10/18), and Quality Planned Development (10/21) and our next WHA Board Meeting is on November 16th. For more information about an upcoming event or committee meeting please reach out to me or Jennifer Boggs.
Thank you for what you do for the Greater West Houston Region!
