Out of 20 of the largest nationally rated metro regions Houston ranked “19th in educational attainment.” Houston Guided Pathways for success, or GPS, is a network of strategies that aim to tackle the trend of decreasing numbers when it comes to Houston area higher education completion rates.
The University of Houston has made steps to addressing this issue by creating partnerships with 2 and 4 year institutions in the region.
Associate Provost of University of Houston- Victoria, Dr. Beverly Tomek said “For many years we have done this with 2+2 agreements with individual schools, but the Houston GPS goes above and beyond that to create a deep connection between members institutions. These connections will benefit students in many ways, making their transitions between institutions smooth and minimizing credit loss, thus making it much more feasible to graduate in four years.”
The numbers of enrollment have risen drastically but completion rates are what may end up being the threat to regional economic growth. With these valued partnerships the University of Houston has taken a step toward “improving educational quality for Houston area students.”
“HCC is actively working with U of H to make sure all credits taken by students are aligned with the University Curriculum and transferable.” says Zachary Hodges, President at HCC Northwest. “I am especially excited about the HCC partnership with U of H in Katy. This is one more example of how our institutions are working together to help students save time and money.”
