Howdy WHA Members!
The election results are in, and the greater West Houston region saw a mostly stable election outcome, with incumbents retaining their seats in state House and Senate races, as well as Senator Cruz maintaining his position in the US Senate. This continuity is expected to provide a steady approach to ongoing projects and policy priorities and means ongoing projects—such as road expansions, drainage improvements, and resilience initiatives—are less likely to face disruptions. We also saw a narrow victory for Harris County Flood Control District’s Proposition A, which enables maintenance funding for critical flood mitigation projects which aim to protect the county’s residents and infrastructure from severe weather events.
On the national front, former President Donald Trump secured a significant win, this will have a significant though yet undetermined shape on the tone for the national political landscape and for federal infrastructure spending. Federal policies could shift toward streamlining regulatory processes, potentially accelerating infrastructure approvals and funding, which could mean faster progress on essential projects supporting our region’s rapid growth.
As we wait to see what direction policy takes at the state and national level in the months ahead, you can come learn more about what’s going on at the local level on November 21st at our “Citywide Vision” breakfast panel. We will be hosting At-Large Council Members Julian Ramirez, Twila Carter, and Willie Davis who all took office earlier this year. Moderated by WHA Board Member Harry Masterson (EMBER Real Estate Investment & Development), this engaging event will provide a unique opportunity to learn about the priorities, perspectives, and vision these leaders have for the future of Houston. As the city faces significant challenges and opportunities—from water infrastructure and flood mitigation to mobility and economic growth—this conversation will dive deep into their thoughts for addressing Houston’s most pressing issues.
This month we also have a handful of committee meetings. On November 7th the Water Resouces committee will be meeting to discuss issues of wasted water and their forum coming up in February. On November 11th the Government Affairs committee will be meeting to discuss issues at the state level and finalize our legislative agenda ahead of the session starting in January. On November 12th the Sustainable Infrastructure as well as the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces committee are meeting at Art Storey Park to learn about health benefits from emersion in nature, and to participate in a focus group for the Harris County Precinct 4 “Healthy Parks Plan.” On November 14th the Education and Workforce Committee is looking to discuss the role of education as integral to community growth and success. On November 18th the Quality Planned Development and Regional Mobility Committees are gathering together to start planning our 2025 QPD Symposium slated for June.
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you this month and I thank you for being part of the West Houston Association! Congratulations again to 2024 Awards recipients and recognized projects!
