WHA PARTICIPATES IN GREATER WEST HOUSTON SUBREGIONAL PLANNING INITIATIVE
The Association joins the Greater West Houston “Urban Core” management districts, the City of Houston and other area agencies in a study to improve long range transportation in and to the urban core of our region. The study is being done with the HGAC. Details at this link.
GREATER WEST HOUSTON’S CURRENT AND FUTURE TRANSPORTATION NETWORK
The West Houston Association advocates aggressively for first class highways, thoroughfares and transit. The result: one of the nation’s most accessible growth communities.
The transportation network serving Greater West Houston stands above that of other like regions in Houston and elsewhere in the United States in providing mobility and access, the critical components of a region’s economy. Few similar region’s can match the number and quality of these facilities:
US 290/Northwest Freeway–“Greater West Houston’s Next Great Transportation Corridor” is currently being expanded with over $700 million in contracts or funding approved. And is the subject of a major MOU between TxDOT and Harris County which will greatly accelerate completion of this facility in the near term. This major transportation corridor serves the rapidly growing northwest of Greater West Houston master planned communities and major activity centers. (Click on the shield for more information)
Sam Houston Parkway West–completed in 1987 this tollway has become the north-south backbone of not only Greater West Houston. The entire “Sam Houston” loops the City on an approximate 12-14 mile radius of the CBD of Houston. The final eastern portion was completed in 2011.
The Grand Parkway or SH 99 will be a 180 mile loop around the the Houston Region. In Greater West Houston it is underconstruction by TxDOT as a toll road north of 10 W to US 290. It is largely completed south of 10 W to the Westpark Tollway where it operates as a free road. South of Westpark Tollway, it exits as frontage roads with tolled grade separations being constructed by Fort Bend County. (Click on the shield for more information)
Interstate 10 West (The 10 W) reconstruction of this 21 mile urban freeway was completed in 2008 after a record-breaking 6 year construction schedule. 10 W is recognized as THE premier urban freeway and high occupancy toll roadway in the United States. The 10 W runs through the heart of Greater West Houston and is the main link between the master planned residential communities in the west and the high density urban work centers in the central and eastern portions. 12 miles of 10 W contains the four lane “Katy Managed Lanes”. More information on the planning and record breaking construction of 10 W can be found at this link.
Westpark Tollway Opened in 2004 and extended in 2005 to the Grand Parkway, Westpark Tollway is now in the process of extension beyond SH 99 to FM 1463. It connects over its current length of 19 miles the master planned communities in the west to the Galleria area with direct high speed connectors and through connections to the CBD and Texas Medical Center. Fort Bend County is extending the tollway beyond the Grand Parkway. (Click on the shield for more information)
